HUSTL Pickleball GESAC CLASSIC 2024 Tournament: A Celebration of Skill and Community

Melbourne’s pickleball community came alive this past weekend as the HUSTL Pickleball GESAC CLASSIC tournament unfolded at GESAC. The event showcased not only top-tier pickleball talent but also the camaraderie and spirit that define the sport. With 212 players from diverse locales such as the Gold Coast, London, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Sale, Shepparton, Ocean Grove, Drysdale, Torquay, and across metropolitan Melbourne, the tournament was a testament to the sport’s growing appeal.

The two-day event was a whirlwind of activity, with gender doubles taking place on Saturday and mixed doubles on Sunday. The stadium buzzed with excitement as players displayed remarkable skill and sportsmanship. The ever-improving proficiency of Victoria’s pickleball players was evident, with new faces making it to the podium this year alongside seasoned champions.

A special congratulations to Tom Ta and Craig Jones, who successfully defended their title in the men’s open doubles event, reaffirming their status as the GESAC CHAMPS for another year. Kudos also go to all the other medalists, who showcased incredible talent and dedication.

Here are the detailed results of the tournament:

The event was marked by inclusivity, with para-athlete Martyn Ford, who plays in a specially designed wheelchair, and his partner Kellie Murphy competing against able-bodied players. For many, sharing the court with Martyn and Kellie was the highlight of the tournament.

Now in its second year, the GESAC CLASSIC has solidified its reputation as one of Victoria’s best-organised tournaments. Participants praised the smooth execution and enjoyable experience, emphasising the fun of meeting players from various regions and engaging in high-quality matches.

Tournament organiser David Lurie founder of the MPL (Melbourne Pickleball League) announced plans to expand the tournament series in 2025, aiming to host 6-8 events in Melbourne and across regional Victoria. By focusing on player experience, Lurie plans to ensure that local players can enjoy competitive pickleball without extensive travel and expense. His vision includes well-structured pool sizes and event formats, providing players with ample match play and a memorable tournament experience.
